How to convert Suunto DM5 XML to Garmin FIT

Suunto DM5 and Garmin use different file formats for dive data. If your historical dives are already exported from DM5 as XML, the next step is to turn those XML files into Garmin-compatible FIT files.

1. Start with a valid Suunto DM5 XML file

The converter needs the structured XML exported from Suunto DM5. Keep the original XML unchanged and work from a copy so your source dive data remains protected.

If you are unsure whether your file is suitable, test one or two dives before processing a larger archive.

2. Convert XML to Garmin-compatible FIT

Upload the DM5 XML file to DiveLog Converter. The browser-based converter reads the dive information and generates a FIT file designed for the Garmin workflow.

The purpose of the conversion is to avoid manually recreating every historical dive in Garmin and to avoid command-line conversion steps for ordinary users.

3. Download and verify the FIT file

Download the converted FIT file and import it through Garmin Connect using a desktop web browser. Open the imported dive and check important details such as date, time, depth and dive number against your original log.

Keep both the original Suunto XML and the converted FIT file. That gives you a source archive as well as the Garmin-ready copy.
